Hey everyone welcome to my newsletter. It’s a work in progress, but I plan to make this the home for the insights, cultural commentary, and elsalvdorable things you’ve enjoyed for years on Twitter and IG.
For many who have asked - you can do paid subscriptions to support me. I will do a mix of free posts, and very personal or premium posts will be behind a paywall.
So for my first post I wanted to talk about my username Púchica Danny. I no longer go by “salvi prince” as I did for years on several platforms, partially out of rejecting the implied nationalism and partially out of trying something new. If you’re not from a handful of Central American countries let me explain what “púchica” means. It can be used as “DAMN!,” to express disbelief, in some contexts a euphemism for the bad p-word in Spanish:
“¡Hijo de la gran PÚchica!”
- god fearing Salvadoran
Also the “damn Daniel” viral catchphrase is not the inspiration for it. That was the most annoying week of 2016 *for me*. This versatile saying can be used to express shock, deception, awe. I mostly associate it with my mother and after doing something disappointing or asombroso she would say “púuuchica Danny” in her way. Typing doesn’t do it justice, I’m going to have to figure out how to add sound to this here.
“PÚUUuuuchica Danny”
- My mother probably
Anyways, “púchica, Danny” has made it’s way into my internal monologue: every time I miss the train, have a near death experience, or experience a job loss. Anyways as some of you know I’m recently out of a job that hindered a cross country move from D.C. to Los Angeles (where I’m from) and muttering “damn” … I mean “púchica Danny” to myself quite often these days. So I’m launching this in an effort to supplement my income because journalism is heartless. However, if you can’t pay don’t worry there will be lots of free stuff too.
Danny [pronounced the Spanish way Dani] is what my family, close loved ones call me, and this space is intended to be intimate so here we go.
Saludos mi gente
*Mara is just a word that means “a group of people” in El Salvador and not That Gang™️
